Home to beautiful Bassenthwaite the only true lake of the Lakes

Between The Mountains and The Sea by Alan J Moss

Stands quieter now, this land between the mountains and the sea
Where men once toiled, bent backed beneath the ground,
With close knit streets spreading from bustling ports,
Industry's workings providing thunderous sound.

West, pound incessant waves against the red stone cliffs,
Or flood sheltered creeks where Roman ships were seen.
Inland the terraced houses mark each sunken pit,
The blackened heaps have mellowed with a cloak of green.

East on the slopes a circle stands, once hallowed ground
Its solitude, its meaning loss encourages thought.
The fells raise high, here trampling feet to summit cairns progress,
The paths, once shepherd's alone, now often sought.

Change has wrought another coat to mark this place
From tattered rags of yesterday's old clothes,
Each generation adding substance to the weave
Outwardly transforming what it shows.

Skiddaw

Slumber giant and wake thee not
Lie still amongst your brethren
Ignore the winds and rains, which fall
Atop your head and o'er your flanks.
Sleep, only sleep, beneath your cloak
Of green and heather purple,
Stitched with streams of grey and white,
Above the hem of verdant pine.
Ignore the touch of minuscule man,
So lately come to climb your heights,
Stamping and scrambling on your slaty scalp,
To see your upstart kin now quiet to the south.
Slumber giant and wake thee not,
Lie still amongst your brethren.
