£250,000 Extension underway at The Aquarium
Work is currently underway on a new extension at The Lake District Coast Aqaurium in Maryport.
Mark Vollers explains
"We had been debating for some time what we could do at the aquarium to make visitors come back more often and also how to attract more of the people that come to the Lake District National Park outside the main holiday periods. These are in the main older people who are keen to learn something, not just be simply amused or entertained for an hour or two. So the idea of creating a space where temporary exhibitions could be set up, backed up by an audio-visual theatre , was born. The exhibition themes will centre on the natural history of the Solway Firth, but could also include almost anything to do with the marine environment, including for example marine art or photography. We can advertise these events widely and hopefully people will soon get used to dropping in regularly to see what's going on. All exhibitions and some of the a/v will be free to all comers which has a certain feel good factor about it as the information on show will be highly educational, but we know many people will go on to visit our cafe or pay to see the live fish displays and this is how it makes commercial sense."
So watch out for the opening soon. For more details see www.lakedistrict-coastaquarium.co.uk
The Beacon's busy few months
As well as a visit from the Queen recently, The Beacon has had a busy few months.
May saw the long awaited opening of a new café at the Beacon, the final element to the Beacon’s fresh new offering following its recent refurbishment
The new café facility will be operated by North Country Leisure and will have a wide variety of hot and cold food available, ranging from scrumptious hot panini sandwiches to delicious home baked cakes and scones. The café will be open from 11am until 4pm on the days when the Beacon is open.
Beacon Manager, Sue Palmer said “We’re delighted that the café will be opening soon as we have waited a long time for this. People have been spending longer than expected in the museum itself and have been asking where they can go to grab a quick bite to eat or coffee. Soon, people will be able to access the café and the Beacon from the harbourside as well as by walking up the ramp”.
North Country Leisure have a wealth of culinary experience. They currently operate the leisure trust for Copeland Swimming Pool, Whitehaven Sports Centre, Whitehaven Civic Hall and Copeland Bowls and Sports Centre.
The Beacon at Whitehaven, Copeland’s newly refurbished museum and gallery, is celebrating having been awarded Quality Assured Visitor Attraction status by Visit Britain.
This status is awarded to many types of visitor attraction throughout the country after a rigorous assessment has been carried out. Attractions are assessed against quality benchmarks provided by the industry in aspects such as quality of presentation and interpretation, accessibility, retail offer and toilets.
As well as being “mystery shopped” by an experienced quality assurance assessor from Visit Britain, the Beacon’s leaflets, website, enquiry system, telephone and answerphone messages were also checked.
The “Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme” was launched nationally in 2001 and The Beacon has achieved this status in previous years.
Beacon Manager, Sue Palmer said “We are so proud that we have regained this national status. The whole Beacon team have worked so hard to create the new museum. It’s good to know through quality assessment, comments and feedback that our visitors are having a great experience when they visit us. We’re going to do everything we can to maintain that quality.”
