Summer 2008
All change for The Partnership

New Chair and New Marketing Manager

As well as the newly designed website, a few other things have changed at The Partnership since your last e-newsletter!

First of all Richard Copping of Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, has taken over as Chair of the Partnership. He follows in the footsteps of Denise Smalley who stood down at our Open Meeting in May.

Richard has been a valued member of our Delivery Group for some time now, and will no doubt make a very active Chair! If you need to contact him about anything to do with The Partnership you can do so by e-mailing richardc@lakeditsrictestates.co.uk

Another change is the promotion of Lucy Wilson to Marketing Manager for The Partnership. Lucy takes over from Fiona Tubman who left for pastures new in May.

Lucy will now be responsible for overseeing all the Marketing and Promotional work of The Partnership. If you have any questions please contact her on lwilson@western-lakedistrict.co.uk or 01900 818987

We also have a new member of staff who will be working with us over the summer as a Marketing Assistant. His name is Darren Walker and you can contact him on 01900 818741 or dwalker@western-lakedistrict.co.uk

News from The Partnership
Website

New website goes live!

The Partnership's website has come a long way in the past couple of years, and the recent redevelopment is already proving popular with it's users with a 20% increase in it's monthly visitor numbers already!

The new design which was completed by Cypher Digital reflects the overall feel and branding of the Partnership's two flagship publications, the Holiday Guide and Top Attractions leaflet.

New features include an interactive map and the interactive Holiday Guide. Both of which help make the whole site easier to use for the vistor.

Please take a look around the site by clicking on the links at the top of the page and let us know what you think on info@western-lakedistrict.co.uk

An online media campaign is now underway, and further development to help increase the number of visitors to the site. In turn this should increase the number of visits and enquiries to your own businesses and hopefully increase the number of bookings you take online.

If you are interested in being featured on the website, please contact Lucy Wilson on lwilson@western-lakedistrict.co.uk

£250,000 Extension underway at The Aquarium

Work is currently underway on a new extension at The Lake District Coast Aqaurium in Maryport.

Mark Vollers explains

"We had been debating for some time what we could do at the aquarium to make visitors come back more often and also how to attract more of the people that come to the Lake District National Park outside the main holiday periods. These are in the main older people who are keen to learn something, not just be simply amused or entertained for an hour or two.  So the idea of creating a space where temporary exhibitions could be set up, backed up by an audio-visual theatre , was born. The exhibition themes will centre on the natural history of the Solway Firth, but could also include almost anything to do with the marine environment, including for example marine art or photography. We can advertise these events widely and hopefully people will soon get used to dropping in regularly to see what's going on. All exhibitions and some of the a/v will be free to all comers which has a certain feel good factor about it as the information on show will be highly educational, but we know many people will go on to visit our cafe or pay to see the live fish displays and this is how it makes commercial sense."

So watch out for the opening soon. For more details see www.lakedistrict-coastaquarium.co.uk

The Beacon's busy few months

As well as a visit from the Queen recently, The Beacon has had a busy few months.

May saw the long awaited opening of  a new café at the Beacon, the final element to the Beacon’s fresh new offering following its recent refurbishment

The new café facility will be operated by North Country Leisure and will have a wide variety of hot and cold food available, ranging from scrumptious hot panini sandwiches to delicious home baked cakes and scones. The café will be open from 11am until 4pm on the days when the Beacon is open.

Beacon Manager, Sue Palmer said “We’re delighted that the café will be opening soon as we have waited a long time for this. People have been spending longer than expected in the museum itself and have been asking where they can go to grab a quick bite to eat or coffee. Soon, people will be able to access the café and the Beacon from the harbourside as well as by walking up the ramp”.

North Country Leisure have a wealth of culinary experience.  They currently operate the leisure trust for Copeland Swimming Pool, Whitehaven Sports Centre, Whitehaven Civic Hall and Copeland Bowls and Sports Centre.

The Beacon at Whitehaven, Copeland’s newly refurbished museum and gallery, is celebrating having been awarded Quality Assured Visitor Attraction status by Visit Britain.

This status is awarded to many types of visitor attraction throughout the country after a rigorous assessment has been carried out.  Attractions are assessed against quality benchmarks provided by the industry in aspects such as quality of presentation and interpretation, accessibility, retail offer and toilets.

As well as being “mystery shopped” by an experienced quality assurance assessor from Visit Britain, the Beacon’s leaflets, website, enquiry system, telephone and answerphone messages were also checked.

The “Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme” was launched nationally in 2001 and The Beacon has achieved this status in previous years.

Beacon Manager, Sue Palmer said “We are so proud that we have regained this national status.  The whole Beacon team have worked so hard to create the new museum.  It’s good to know through quality assessment, comments and feedback that our visitors are having a great experience when they visit us. We’re going to do everything we can to maintain that quality.”
