Local Towns

From coastal gem towns such as Whitehaven, Millom, Workington, and Maryport, to the beautifully presented Georgian streets of Cockermouth. From the northern seaside towns of Allonby and Silloth boasting one of the most coveted coastlines in the country, to the quiet and unassuming towns of St Bees and Beckermet. These are to name a few of the most beautiful towns in the North of England, all packed with things to see and do, and places to stay.

Each month we will be featuring one of our towns to give you a flavour for what's in store when you visit... take a look and discover our Local Towns.

KESWICK

KESWICK IS OPEN AND WAITING TO WELCOME VISITORS AFTER THE FLOODS!

BREAKING NEWS - PRINCE CHARLES TO SWITCH ON KESWICK CHRISTMAS LIGHTS (WITH JULIA BRADBURY!)

Food, festivities and famous faces provide light relief at Keswick Christmas switch on.

This weekend, the only thing Keswick will be awash with is festive fun. Having triumphed over the effects of the recent flooding in the region, the town’s spirit is far from drenched, as a weekend of entertainment and fine food promises to demonstrate to tourists that Keswick is most definitely open for business.

The Keswick Food Fayre, beginning on Friday 27 November at 1pm, will showcase an array of the highest quality, locally produced foods, including comforting mulled wine and mince pies, hogroast, warming soups, a superb selection of meats, cheeses, Christmas puddings, cakes and much more.

Local celebrity chef Peter Sidwell from the town’s Good Taste Café will be performing a locally-inspired cookery demonstration to encourage keen cooks and tantalise tastebuds. Peter is currently producing a special 2010 calendar of Lake District recipes, from which all proceeds will be donated to people affected by the recent floods.

At 5.30pm in Market Square, BBC presenter Julia Bradbury, of Countryfile and Wainwright Walks fame, will greet visitors and residents, launch a flood support appeal and – most importantly – switch on the fabulous Christmas lights.

Julia said that Keswick has been in her thoughts since the news of the flooding broke: “I can’t wait to get to Keswick to show my support. Turning on the lights will be a real honour as Keswick and I have had a love affair ever since the Wainwright Walks programmes.

“I’m sure the people of the Lakes will use their resolve and sense of community to get through yet another tough challenge.”

The vast majority of shops and businesses in Keswick are open and welcoming custom – now more than ever. In spite of the adverse weather that Cumbria has braved during the past week, the strong sense of community is winning through and residents are determined to emphasise to visitors that the town can be reached and is absolutely worth the trip.

Keswick is still easily accessible via the A66 or A591 and both routes divert around the closed Greta and Station Street bridges. The villages of Braithwaite, Borrowdale, Bassenthwaite, Thornthwaite, Honister Pass and Buttermere are all open – and many attractions and accommodation in these areas are fully operational.
