About Norman Nicholson...

Devoted to capturing the reality of life in 20th century Cumbria, Nicholson’s poetry reflects an insightful appreciation of the industrial Western Lakes landscapes and towns, shunning any tendency to romaticise the landscape but rather representing a more authentic poetic interpretation of the Western Lake District. Romantic his poems are not but somehow they exude a passion and love for all the details, from the minutiae to the vast, from plankton and spores to the soaring mountain peaks and dazzling sunsets over the Irish Sea. It is hard not to be moved by the attuned, observational and beautifully lyrical language of his poems.

Published by T. S. Eliot and Faber & Faber and awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1977, and an OBE in 1981, this talented poet who died in 1987 today remains relatively and surprisingly unknown. To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of his birthday, we launched the Norman Nicholson Poetry and Photography Competition supported by the Pennington Hotel and Faber & Faber.

Winning prizes…

The Norman Nicholson Poetry and Photography Competition is supported by the Pennington Hotel with a superb prize for the winning entry of an evening meal* at the award winning Estuary Restaurant (*to the value of £60 & subject to availability).

Additionally the competition is supported by Faber & Faber with a copy of ‘Collected Poems by Norman Nicholson’ along with a copy of ‘Wednesday Early Closing’ Norman Nicholson’s autobiography, to 3 runners-up.
