One of the Western Lake District’s most elusive artists, Percy Kelly, was born in 1918 in Workington. Like his contemporaries, Sheila Fell and L S Lowry, he preferred the raw edginess of our coasts and fells rather than the prettiness of the Lake District. He could draw as soon as he was able to hold a pencil and from an early age he wandered the docks near his home, he liked the clear lines of boats, shipyards, railway lines, buildings and pit heads. As a teenager he explored further afield, always with a pencil and sketch pad.

Percy Kelly died in 1993 leaving a vast collection of work… his reluctance to sell any is one of his many traits. His large panoramas of the coast and harbours of the Western Lake District made in the 1960s are impressive and he is widely regarded as one of the most talented Cumbrian artists of the 20th Century.

This introductory Western Lake District Percy Kelly trail takes you along Kelly’s travels, seeing what he saw through his paintings and drawings.
