How to get here

Below are details of travel information for Cumbria, including how to get here, and also how to travel around once you are in Western Lake District.

By rail:

Northern Rail operate the Cumbrian Coast railway line connecting many towns and villages of the Western Lake District with Carlisle in the north and Barrow-in-Furness in the south. The railway provides a scenic route through the district and links with the West Coast Main Line at Carlisle for connections to the North East, Scotland, Yorkshire and the south and with trains to Lancashire, Manchester and Manchester Airport at Barrow-in-Furness.

                           Coastline Train

Many attractions in Maryport, Millom, Whitehaven and Workington can be visited using the Cumbrian Coast railway line and what better way to visit the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway than going by train!

By bus:
There are links with the National Express bus service.

You can also get more local bus information and timetables from Stagecoach North West.

By road:
Accessing the area by the south is junction 36 on the M6, A590, A5092 then A595. The main road routes are the A66, connecting with the M6, junction 40 at Penrith. This joins the A595 and A596, linking Western Lake District with Barrow-in-Furness in the south and Carlisle in the north.

For comprehensive public transport information, including bus, boat and rail services in Cumbria, call Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 . Lines are open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. Calls provided by BT will be charged at 10p per minute plus 6p set up fee per call. Mobile, business and other providers' charges may vary.
