The breathtaking view of Eskdale that awaits you at Hardknott Fort is more than worth the journey, but you almost feel like you’ve stepped back in time. This remote fort, located in dramatic landscape, dates from the second century but you can still make out what would have been the headquarters building, commandant's house, bath house and parade ground.
Home to the most westerly of the lakes but off the tourist trail, the Ennerdale Valley is a truly beautiful and undiscovered place. The innovative Wild Ennerdale project is allowing the landscape to evolve naturally, without human intervention, and makes a visit to this valley a wonderfully unique experience.
With 800 years of history, beautiful gardens, an owl sanctuary, maze, and even a resident ghost, Muncaster Castle has certainly earned its Cumbrian Tourism Award.
